Mars closest to Earth

According to a report in Space.com, the Red Planet has reached its closest position since 2003, 57.6 million kilometers from Earth.
In the Solar System Mars is the 4th planet closest to the Sun after the Earth, 230 million kilometers from the Sun. The Earth completes its journey in the Sun orbit in 365 days, Mars completes it in 687 days.
In order for the Earth and Mars to come closest, the position of Mars closest to the Sun must coincide with the position of the Earth farthest away from the Sun.
Mars was the closest to Earth in 55.6 million kilometers in 2003.
The next close pass is expected to happen on October 6, 2020.
